Education
My name is Rutger Laman Trip. I have a master’s degree in Dutch law (specialising in corporate law) from Erasmus University Rotterdam. While I was a student, I held various administrative positions with my student association and with the university. I also did a lot of sport, and I had an internship with a law firm in Amsterdam and New York.
I had five specific wishes as regards my first employer. For a start, I wanted to work for a big Dutch multinational that would eventually give me the opportunity to work abroad. Secondly, I wanted to quickly have a managerial position. Thirdly, I wanted to be able to take good training courses in addition to my work. I also thought it was important to have a working environment with a corporate culture that suited me and pleasant colleagues. Last but not least, I wanted to work for a company with a tangible product and/or service that I felt an affinity with. I came into contact with TNT through company.
Working for TNT
I started as a Team Coach at one of TNT Post’s sites. This meant I was in charge of a team of 60 postmen and postwomen. I was responsible for getting the mail out as efficiently as possible each day and for keeping people enthusiastic. It was a big challenge and I learned a lot from it.
In my present position, I sell mail services. I have 30 medium-sized companies (mailing firms and publishers) as my customers and I am responsible for about EUR 17 million in revenue. I have targets for the year and I arrange my daily work for myself. In the present competitive market, this is all very exciting and it’s all going very fast. I learn a great deal from my colleagues, from specific training sessions, and from sales negotiations with customers. It’s a wonderfully free and dynamic job!
I like the fact that there’s a lot happening in the postal market, meaning that the company is constantly developing. That means that we need to get stronger and better all the time. I also like the way TNT is aware of its role in society and is actively making a contribution. Unfortunately, you are sometimes made aware of the old civil service mentality, for example when you feel things need to change quickly but it’s not possible because of petty rules and the cumbersome nature of the setup. On the other hand, that’s not such a terrible problem for me in my present position. A lot is changing and TNT is becoming more and more a genuinely commercial enterprise!
