Express delivery giant TNT’s massive cash boost to malnourished children in Tanzania

16 July 2009

The fast-footed employees at Warwickshire express delivery giant TNT have delivered a massive cash boost that will help feed and educate 1,200 malnourished children in Tanzania for a year.

The fund-raisers based in Atherstone raised a whopping £25,000 in only five days for the United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP) – the culmination of which was a ‘Running on Empty’ marathon relay at TNT’s headquarters in Atherstone.

More than 30 employees took it in turns to run the equivalent distance of a marathon, raising £2,000 in the process, which contributed towards a grand total. The money raised by TNT will be channelled into the WFP’s School Feeding Programme whereby children in developing countries are encouraged to attend school and receive a free nourishing meal. All donations from TNT will go to provide much-needed nutrition and education for youngsters in Tanzania.

Stuart Stobie, divisional managing director, said: “It costs just 7p per day to feed and educate a child in Tanzania or £25 a year. The initiative is part of an on-going partnership that has seen TNT in the UK generate more than £300,000 since 2004 to support the excellent work undertaken by the WFP.”

More than 60 TNT depots and offices around the UK joined the Atherstone team as part of the specially-designated week with a bewildering array of fund-raising activities including fancy dress days, chest waxings, depot beauty salons, health checks, running and rowing challenges, cake baking, noodle-eating, managers in stocks, auctions, raffles and car valeting. Stuart added: “It was a fantastic effort from the team. Everyone was really enthused by Fight Hunger Week and it was great to see staff conjuring some cracking fund-raising events to raise money. The ‘Running on Empty’ challenge really captivated the imagination of the staff.

“Our 2009 donation goes some way to providing real hope and a brighter future for hungry children in Tanzania.”

The TNT Fight Hunger Week was an integral part of a worldwide TNT programme to raise awareness of the need to combat global hunger.
