Hot topics

TNT has become the subject of takeover bid speculation. Can you tell us more about it?

TNT has been listed since 1998. We have seen many rumors during these ten years. It has always been our policy never to comment on such speculation and market rumors.

What is the impact of fuel prices on TNT’s performance?

In our mail operations, the impact is negligible. In our express business, we use a transparent fuel surcharge that recovers most of fuel costs rises. The sharp rise in fuel prices during the second quarter of 2008 temporarily led to increased cost pressure due to the time lag in passing the additional costs.

More importantly, we have seen some Express customers shifting from air to road transport. The trade-off is actually not new and we anticipated it by developing economy products that rely on TNT’s strong express road networks. The continuous volume growth in our European Road Network proves us right. We also help our customers save on fuel costs through more efficient supply chains.

Moreover, we constantly review and enhance our networks and fleet to optimize routes and reduce fuel consumption. For example, TNT seeks to find the right balance between air and road transportation, using road whenever possible. On the long term, TNT is exploring alternatives to fossil fuel. We are testing electric, hybrid, bio-fuel, or CNG-propelled vehicles in the Netherlands, Germany, China, India, Australia, and the UK. Besides adding more fuel-efficient vehicles to the fleet, we promote economic driving by training drivers and managers.

Where does TNT stand on the opening of European postal markets to competition?

TNT supports an open market with fair competition, protecting the interests of customers. Such an open market will encourage efficiency, innovation, quality, and truer prices, thus ensuring the future of the postal sector.

Under European Union rules, most mail markets including France must be open to competition from the start of 2011. Twelve of the EU's 27 states, mainly in Eastern Europe along with Greece and Luxembourg, can delay this to 2013.

TNT has repeatedly stated it is ready for a full opening to competition, provided there is a level-playing field. That is still not the case due to barriers such as licenses and VAT regimes. TNT is calling on the European Commission to counter obstruction of competition in the European mail markets.

What is TNT’s response to scam emails and fake websites?

TNT is taking action against fake websites and fraudulent emails abusing TNT’s identity to mislead internet shoppers. The emails, claiming to be from TNT, usually ask advance payments for goods ordered online, before TNT allegedly ships them. Scammers may also request an advance payment before the release of some lottery prize.

We strongly advise our customers to contact their local TNT customer service department in case of any doubt as to the authenticity of such website or email, and to forward any suspicious mails to TNT’s Security department at e-crime@tnt.com. Furthermore, we encourage customers to report the case with the local police. Some instances have actually led to arrests.

We have had some success in closing these fake operations down, thanks to the alertness of TNT customers and to our good relationships with Internet service providers. In the second half of 2007, TNT closed down over 1,500 scam websites and email addresses abusing the group’s identity.

What is TNT’s strategy?

TNT’s strategy is to focus on providing mail and express delivery services by expertly managing delivery networks. We call it “Focus on Networks.” TNT therefore sold its logistics and freight management operations to concentrate on mail and express networks, while optimising its capital structure. Since December 2007, TNT’s focus has been to strength its core activities (Mail Netherlands and Express Europe) while developing emerging platforms, such as European Mail Networks, parcels, and Express emerging businesses (China, Brazil, India, etc.)

Where is TNT active?

TNT offers postal and mail-related services in eight European countries and express delivery services to over 200 countries, relying on fully owned operations in 65 countries. We enjoy a particularly strong presence in Europe and Asia.

When was TNT founded?

In its current independent form, TNT was created on 29 June 1998. TNT’s roots, however, go a long way.

The ancestor of today’s Mail division, Royal TPG Post, came into existence in 1799 when, following the example of France, the Netherlands’ postal services were converted to a national enterprise.

The name TNT and TNT’s Express division find their origins in Australia. In 1946, Ken Thomas set up his business Thomas Nationwide Transport with just one van. Since then, TNT has grown into a global company with its own air fleet.

Corporate Social Responsibility

What does TNT do for the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP)?

In 2002, TNT and the World Food Programme (WFP) started a partnership to help fight hunger worldwide. As the largest corporate sponsor of the world's biggest humanitarian aid agency, TNT is committed to contributing its employees, skills and resources to support WFP.

In 2007 alone, TNT invested €5.6 million in the partnership in the form of in-kind services. Employee fundraising provided an additional €1.6 million.

What was TNT’s response to the Sichuan earthquake of May 2008?

As a large employer in China, we immediately sought after the safety of our employees and their families in Sichuan. No TNT employee was personally hurt. We immediately sent food, water, tents, and clothes. We also offered our help to the broader community, contributing transport and logistics services to several help agencies, such as the China Charity, the China Foundation for Children and Adolescents, the China Foundation for the Alleviation of Poverty and the China Youth Development Foundation. In the meantime, we raised funds among our employees in China and abroad and matched their contributions. All donations were channelled through the China Youth Development Foundation. In addition, TNT China is funding the rebuilding of a New Hope School in the Wenchuan area.

Did TNT help victims of the Nargis cyclone in Myanmar?

TNT provided support, both independently and as member of joint Logistics Emergency Teams. For instance, TNT worked with the Royal Thai Army to deliver food and drinking water to Myanmar. At the end of May 2008, a convoy of 22 TNT trucks drove to the Thai-Myanmar border, carrying 260,000 liters of water, 12 tons of rice, 25 tons of eggs, biscuits, flashlights, fish cans, instant noodles, clothes, and flour, adding up to a total of 150 metric tons. TNT unloaded the trucks at the border and handed over the goods to the authorities of Myanmar.

Since TNT launched its CO2 emissions-cutting programme (Planet Me) in August 2007, what have been the achievements?

We have made progress in three areas. First, we understand our carbon footprint better, which is allowing us to develop a framework for measuring our CO2 emissions. What gets measured gets managed.

Second, we are taking action to reduce emissions of our operations, leading to substantial CO2 savings of 20,000 tonnes in 2007. In May 2008 alone, we introduced more than 100 electric or hybrid electric trucks in China, Australia, and the U.K.

Third, we have created tools to engage our employees at work and at home. In the Netherlands, for instance, we have teamed up with an electricity provider to offer all our employees the opportunity to switch to ‘green’ electricity and gas at home at a lower cost. We have also created an event called “Drive Me” that promotes fuel-efficient driving. Benefits range from prouder employees to more eco-efficient behaviours.

What is most important, beyond our effort, is that climate change is on the global agenda. Take, for instance, the EU Emissions Trading Scheme, or the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon’s statement that reversing the effects of climate change was “the defining challenge of our age.”

Mail

As a privately owned company, what are TNT’s views on universal service obligations?

TNT is attached to the notion of public service. Every Dutch person must be able to enjoy quality mail services at affordable prices. The Dutch government has commissioned TNT to deliver this “universal service.” TNT is bound to offer specific services, such as the daily handling and delivery of all letters not exceeding 50 grams and of single-item parcels weighing up to 10 kilograms. TNT Post is also responsible for the network of orange mailboxes and postal outlets.

How does the Dutch postal universal service compare with the rest of Europe?

The service requirements in the Netherlands exceed the minimum European level. That goes for the frequency of mail delivery (six days a week in the Netherlands, compared with five according to the EU) and the speed of delivery (next-day delivery in 95% of the time in the Netherlands, whereas the EU does not impose any level).

Can you update us on the debate regarding the full opening of the Netherlands’ postal market?

The Dutch government in May 2008 decided to postpone the full opening of the domestic mail market because of uncertainties over a level playing field in Germany and labour conditions in the postal sector. The Dutch Secretary of Economic Affairs will again discuss the matter with Parliament in October 2008.

Express

How big is TNT Express?

TNT’s express division is among the world’s largest express operators and the number one business-to-business express company in Europe. Worldwide, it delivers 4.4 million parcels, documents, and pieces of freight a week to more than 200 countries. With 2007 revenues over €6.5 billion, TNT’s express division continually expands its air and road network in Europe, Asia, Australia, South-America, and the Middle East, connecting international routes to fast-growing domestic road networks. The division employs over 75,000 people, runs 26,760 trucks, and flies 47 aircraft. It operates a network of 2,331 depots and sorting centers.

What is the strategy of TNT Express?

TNT’s express division has set itself four goals:

  • Strengthen its number one position in Europe in national and intra-European express flows
  • Build volumes from China to fuel its European network and establish an intra-China network
  • Build the number one position in selected emerging markets, such as India, Brazil and China
  • Expand its position in special services, a range of flexible and personalized solutions that compliment standardized network services

Is TNT Express active in the B2C market?

TNT’s express division mainly serves businesses, but also explores opportunities in the fast-growing B2C market. In France, for instance, TNT offers next-day delivery services to individual Internet shoppers, at home or at one of 3,800 service points (Relais Colis®).

Is TNT Express active in North America?

TNT chose not to set a strong foot on the US domestic market, which is dominated by two players enjoying huge economies of scale. TNT, however, offers international express delivery services to and from the United States and Canada. Typical customers are automotive, pharmaceutical and other manufacturers shipping high-value, time-sensitive products. We operate a nightly transatlantic flight to New York and make next-day deliveries in seventeen large North American cities, such as Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston and Toronto. We operate 3 international air gateways in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, and 15 international depots.
